Façades and epitaphs

About Project:

FAÇADES AND EPITAPHS

The general objective of the renovation is the conservative maintenance as a result of which the original aesthetic appearance of the church will be preserved while keeping the maximal quantity of the valuable historic material dating from various historic periods. Undoubtedly, the present from of the significantly rebuilt chapels, vestibules, buttresses and large parts of the walls should be kept. The maintenance of the brick bonds is of key importance for the church and its aesthetic perception. All of the various brick bonds in the present arrangement should be preserved as well as the different historic brick formats. For this reason, all contemporary machine bricks should be removed, which have recently been added in small quantities at different levels of the walls of the church (especially the buttresses). In some cases or where the supplementation is especially anaesthetic, the bricks are exchanged.

In order to achieve a good technical state and an appropriate aesthetic expression of the façade, it is also necessary to correctly clean the surface of the walls. In this process, with due care and without damaging the bricks and their natural protection which is the sinter, the harmful layers of atmospheric residue are removed from the brick bonds and stone elements. Particularly weakened and dropping brick bonds undergo impregnation to strengthen their structure and restore the original strength properties of the brick. A similar impregnation treatment is applied to the stone elements: cornices, plinths, epitaphs, and portals. The protection of the wall surface against water penetration along with aggressive and harmful atmospheric substances is obtained in the process of complete hydrophobisation by means of the coating of the wall with an organosilicon formulation (methylopolisiloxylen).

Renovation and maintenance of the façade of the cathedral takes place according to the conservation programme approved by the Conservator of Monuments for the Opole Province and created by Prof. Dr hab. Ireneusz Płuska.

Since 2015, the Parish has realised a series of projects which constituted the stages of the renovation and maintenance of the temple and its epitaphs:
